Hundreds of NADMO Staff, including Directors, Management, Regional Directors, and other Staff have converged in Accra for a 3-Day Disaster Risk Management and Leadership Training to strengthen the institutional capacity of NADMO and its stakeholders to perform effectively in accordance with one of their objectives.
The training workshop commenced on Tuesday, 21st October, 2025 at the Institute of Local Government Studies, Madina themed “resetting NADMO for improved performance in disaster resilience: The role of Management”, aims to build the capacity of Regional Directors and Senior Management to effectively implement NADMO’s strategic objectives, improve coordination and strengthen leadership in disaster preparedness and response.
In his welcome address, the Director General of NADMO, Major (Rtd) Dr. Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon, charged the participants to pay attention and participate in all the sections and so as to learn new ways of managing disaster situations in their respective regions.
According to him, “training of this nature helps sharpen your skills, so take charge”, in this “knowledge improvement workshop”.
On behalf of his Minister, the Deputy Minister of Interior, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi reminded the participants of the challenges confronting the nation when it comes to prevention and preparedness, and that “disasters are enormous”.
And “you as frontline responders by now should appreciate the enormity of the challenges and to help overcome them”, and it is for this reason that I wish to congratulate the Director General and his team for putting together this programme to build your capacity, offer a platform for knowledge sharing, get to know yourselves to collaborate well and better in the future and ultimately understand the rudiments of the responsibilities assigned to you”.
He, however, assured that as a Ministry, they are leading the Government’s quest to prevent preventable disasters and to prepare to mitigate or promptly respond to them should they happen but “let’s all aim at preventing disasters before they occur”.
He noted that flooding in particular should be brought under manageable levels, “where we have not recorded flooding in the last three years, all efforts must be made to ensure flooding does not occur”.
The National Disaster Management Organization includes is mandated to response and recovery, prevent disasters, create awareness in prone communities and institutions on all hazard/disaster types, train and motivate the communities especially volunteers to initiate actions to prevent and respond to disasters; bring relief to disaster victims, assist to reduce poverty in vulnerable and poor communities through social mobilization for employment creation and income generation.
