The Member of Parliament for Effutu and Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has raised alarm over the worsening water crisis in the Effutu Municipality, calling on the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to urgently restore water supply to affected communities.
In a formal statement, Mr. Afenyo-Markin described the situation as “unbearable”, stating that the majority of communities in Winneba and surrounding areas remain without access to potable, pipe-borne water.
The water shutdown, now entering its third week, is affecting over 140,000 residents, with far-reaching consequences across health, education, sanitation, and local commerce.
“This prolonged shutdown has created unbearable hardship for the population, and its effects are being felt across every sector of community life,” the MP stated.
Health facilities are reportedly struggling to maintain hygiene standards, increasing the risk of cholera, dysentery, and other waterborne diseases. Schools and tertiary institutions are also facing operational challenges due to poor sanitation.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin further noted that families are resorting to costly and inconsistent private water suppliers, with children and the elderly being the most affected. Small businesses, including food vendors and hospitality operators, have also suffered major disruptions, causing economic slowdowns across the municipality.
“The absence of water supply has compounded sanitation challenges, heightened disease risks, and is threatening the socio-economic well-being of the Municipality,” he emphasized.
The MP is demanding that GWCL immediately clarify the cause of the disruption and provide a clear timeline for when residents can expect an uninterrupted water supply to resume.
