Ghana is set to revolutionize its passport services with the commissioning of new passport offices in all the 16 regions, including the six newly created ones.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the development on social media, highlighting the significance of having passport application centres in every region.
“This is the first time in Ghana’s history that all regions will have their own Passport Application Centres,” Minister Ablakwa wrote, emphasizing the convenience this will bring to citizens. No longer will Ghanaians need to travel hours to another region to have their biometrics captured.
The move is part of the government’s efforts to create a more efficient and accessible public service, Minister Ablakwa noted, referencing the December 7, 2023, election that saw a new government come into power. “We are determined to create that new Ghana and never to take your massive support for granted,” he said.
The Minister also reminded citizens of his earlier promise to establish seven passport application centres in regions lacking them, which has been fulfilled.
Additionally, the passport application fee has been reduced by 30%, from GHS500 to GHS350.
The timing of this development is particularly noteworthy, as Ghanaian football fans prepare to travel to the US and Canada to support the Black Stars at the 2026 World Cup. Minister Ablakwa joked that the new centres are a timely and fortuitous development for these fans.
“For God and Country,” he concluded.
