The Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has celebrated the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), exponential growth in the last ten (10) months of President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.
He attributed the achievements to the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) visionary leadership, the uncapped National Health Insurance Levy and the enhanced stakeholder collaborations.
Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh addressed stakeholders at the opening ceremony of the NHIA maiden Stakeholder Conference held in Accra on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, under the theme, Consolidating Strategic Partnerships for a Resilient and Inclusive Health Insurance Scheme.”
He commended the NHIA Chief Executive, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe’s team, saying, “I am proud of the remarkable work you have all done in improving health service delivery.”
He posited that the NHIS had been transformed into a robust healthcare system, providing financial risk protection to all residents in Ghana.
“We have built a sustainable insurance system because it is rooted in domestic resource mobilization. This approach ensures financial stability and independence, so even when external aid is cut, we can still process Claims without challenges.”
He noted that the strengthened local resources mobilization necessitated the timely reimbursements of the Authority’s credentialled healthcare facilities.
The Minister acknowledged past delays in Claims payments and healthcare facilities management legitimate concerns about realistic tariffs and reaffirmed the government’s steadfastness in resolving these challenges.
“As leaders, our focus should be on solving problems and consolidating the gains made, not merely moving from one issue to the next. We have resolved the major issue of coverage under the NHIS, and we are now taking steps to expedite the review of tariffs for service providers, which will be seen very soon,” he said.
The Minister also identified illegal payments within the health system as a major concern, urging all stakeholders to work collectively to eliminate the practice.
He stressed that true satisfaction in healthcare delivery comes only when clients are fully content with the services they receive.
In outlining broader government health initiatives, the Minister highlighted President’s vision for improving healthcare access, mentioning programs such as the Ghana Medical Trust Fund known as “Mahama Cares” and the Free Primary Healthcare initiatives.
He explained that the goal of the Free Primary Healthcare policy is to ensure that every citizen can access essential primary healthcare services, whether or not they hold an NHIS card.
The Minister concluded by encouraging all stakeholders to continue contributing to the President’s vision of building a healthier population and ensuring that every community enjoys quality healthcare services.
