The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, together with the Municipal Chief Executive for the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA), Alfred Allotey – Gaisie has led a major decongestion and sanitation enforcement exercise to remove traders operating around the Fire Service Station and medians at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange.
The operation saw the removal of traders and unauthorised structures that had taken over the frontage of the fire station, obstructing access for emergency vehicles, as well as canopies mounted along the medians.
The two Chief Executives also used the opportunity to inspect faulty and worn-out traffic lights within the enclave, assuring motorists and pedestrians of measures to fix them.
Addressing traders during the operation, the Mayor cautioned them to leave the streets and medians and operate strictly within the demarcated trading areas along the pavement.
He said the Assembly would no longer tolerate activities that endanger public safety, impede fire service operations, or contribute to congestion around one of the city’s busiest intersections.
He pointed out that the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange must remain safe, orderly, and accessible at all times, especially as it serves as a vital emergency and traffic corridor adding that traders who return to the unauthorised areas risk possible prosecution.
