The Government of Ghana (GoG) and the Government of Japan (GoJ), through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), have signed a $13.44 million (1,992,000,000 Japanese Yen) grant agreement to enhance power supply stability in Tamale City. The funds will support the construction of a substation and power distribution lines to strengthen the region’s electricity infrastructure.

The agreement was signed on behalf of the Government of Ghana by Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister for Finance, while Her Excellency Suzuki Momoko, Chief Representative of JICA, signed on behalf of the Government of Japan.

The project marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s efforts to improve energy infrastructure, particularly in the Northern Region, where stable electricity is crucial for economic development, industrialization, and improving the livelihoods of residents. The initiative will stabilize the power supply in Tamale City, ensuring reliable electricity for businesses, households, and essential service providers. With improved electricity access, economic activities in the region are expected to thrive, creating employment opportunities and enhancing overall social well-being.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Dr. Ato Forson emphasized the importance of the project in addressing longstanding power stability challenges in Tamale and its surrounding communities. He noted that access to stable electricity is a key driver of industrialization and economic expansion in the Northern Region.

On her part, Her Excellency Suzuki Momoko reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s development, particularly in energy infrastructure. She expressed optimism that the project would enhance the quality of life for residents and contribute to Ghana’s overall economic transformation.

The grant facility is part of a broader partnership between Ghana and Japan aimed at strengthening energy security and fostering sustainable development. Once completed, the substation and distribution lines will play a critical role in bridging Ghana’s energy gap and ensuring a more resilient electricity supply in the Northern Region. The project is set to commence soon, with all stakeholders working together to achieve its successful implementation.
