Under the circumstances surrounding difficulties in meeting bail sum leaving Bernard Antwi Boasiako known in public cycles as Chairman Wontimi, Onyinah Acheampong Kwasi-Gyamfi, the Kwabre East lawmaker is appealing for what he termed “Self Recognisance Bail for the Ashanti Regional Chairman.
Justifying his call, the Kwabre East legislator disclosed that the GHS50 million cedi bail granted him by the Economic and Organized Crime Office(EOCO) was too outrageous, making it difficult to realize the bail sum.
He was speaking in an interview with FMnewsonline while protesting at the forecourt of EOCO.
The lawmaker believes that Chairman Wontimi would not attempt absconding when committed to bail as he is seeking to contest the National Chairmanship position of the New Patriotic Party.
In any case, the MP added, the Ashanti Regional Chairman presented himself to the police of his own volition to the CID before operatives EOCO unacceptably accosted him.
“A bail of GHS50 million is not fair. In any case, he should have been given a self-recognizance bill considering a man of his caliber”, the lawmaker lamented.
Onyinah Acheampong maintained that GHS50 million simply implies a way of inhibiting his bail which he said was not fair.
Mr. Acheampong conceded that the time has come for politicians to behave well, that is, not to bend the rules to favor themselves and to the disadvantage of others.
“It is not fair, you know; posterity will judge us all,” he cautioned.
Chairman Wontimi was arrested by EOCO after attending to the invitation by the Criminal Investigation Department(CID) of the Ghana Police Service and has since been detained in their custody.
