The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has elected new chairmen to steer the affairs of its three Sub-Metropolitan District Councils for the next two years, following successful polls held at the City Hall.
For the Ashiedu-Keteke Sub-Metropolitan District, Hon. Peter Quaye, Assembly Member for Korle Woko Electoral Area, secured all 16 valid votes, earning a unanimous endorsement from members. At the Okaikoi South Sub-Metropolitan District, Hon. David Abalo, Assemblyman for Bubui Electoral Area, garnered 18 votes to clinch the position, while Hon. Theophilus Quaye Assemblyman for the Chorkor Electoral Area was elected chairman of the Ablekuma South Sub-Metropolitan District after securing 8 votes to beat Ebenezer Gyeshie, who had 7 votes.
The newly elected chairmen who were elected in accordance with the Local Governance Act 2016 (Act 936) after the successful swearing-in of new Unit committee members would be responsible for providing leadership in local governance, supervising sub-metro operations, enhancing revenue mobilisation, and coordinating development activities within their jurisdictions.
Speaking after the elections, the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, congratulated the chairmen and urged them to approach their mandate with dedication and a strong sense of responsibility.
He said the role of sub-metro chairman was critical to the smooth implementation of the Reset Accra Agenda and the strengthening of grassroots governance to bring development.
He stressed that the sub-metros must work closely with communities, departments, and unit committees to ensure that sanitation, development control, and public service delivery are carried out effectively, adding that the success of the AMA depended heavily on the efficiency and responsiveness of sub-metro leadership.
