President John Dramani Mahama has called on the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, and Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, to abandon their intentions to introduce a Private Member’s Bill to repeal the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) Act.
This request follows President Mahama’s public endorsement of the OSP as a vital institution in Ghana’s fight against corruption during a meeting with the Peace Council.
The OSP, a premier anti-corruption agency in Ghana, empowered to investigate and prosecute corruption cases.
President Mahama believes the office plays a critical role in promoting transparency and good governance, and it’s premature to scrap it.
He urged the OSP to intensify efforts to build public trust and tackle corruption decisively.
The Majority Leader and Chief Whip announced their intentions citing structural and constitutional challenges, duplication of prosecutorial functions, and high operational costs.
However, critics, including President Mahama, argue that dismantling the OSP could weaken Ghana’s anti-corruption framework.
