Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has made good on his promise to win the Akwatia parliamentary seat.
The NDC’s candidate, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, secured a decisive victory in the hotly contested by-election, polling 18,199 votes (54%) against the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, who garnered 15,235 votes.¹
Asiedu Nketiah’s confidence in the NDC’s chances was evident even before the election, as he declared the party’s intention to win the seat despite already holding a two-thirds majority in parliament.
He emphasized the importance of contesting the seat to allow NDC members in Akwatia to exercise their right to vote.

The Akwatia constituency is known for its swing nature, having alternated between the NDC and NPP since 1992. The NDC’s victory in this by-election cements their hold on the seat and demonstrates their continued political momentum.
This win is significant not only for the NDC but also for President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, as it provides continued legislative support from a crucial constituency.
Bernard Bediako Baidoo won with a margin of 2,964 votes, securing 54% of the total valid votes cast.
The election drew 34,122 voters to polling stations across the constituency, with 33,819 valid ballots counted and 303 rejected.
Street celebrations erupted among NDC supporters following the results announcement, reflecting the party’s relief at maintaining government representation in the competitive constituency.
