Ghana is proudly hosting the WESPAC 2025 in Accra, marking a significant milestone in promoting mind sports and fostering regional collaboration. The event brought together representatives from over 25 nations, including distinguished delegates, international champions, and corporate partners, united by a shared passion for intellectual competition.
In his keynote address, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, highlighted the transformative role of Scrabble beyond mere entertainment. He emphasized that the game fosters critical thinking, vocabulary development, emotional intelligence, and discipline among players, skills that mirror real-life challenges and opportunities.
The Sports Minister praised the efforts of the Scrabble Association of Ghana for elevating the sport’s profile nationally, including its recognition as a demonstration sport during the 13th African Games. “Scrabble is not just a game; it is a tool of education, empowerment, and expression,” he stated, underscoring Ghana’s commitment to inclusive sports development.
The Minister announced plans to integrate Scrabble into Ghana’s National Recreation and Wellness Programme, making it accessible across districts and regions. Additionally, he revealed ongoing collaborations with the Ministry of Education to embed Scrabble into the school curriculum, aiming to develop sharper, more analytical students while supporting literacy and learning outcomes.
Addressing corporate partners, Hon. Adams acknowledged their vital role in shaping future generations’ skills, noting that today’s young minds are the workforce of tomorrow. He also urged media outlets to spotlight stories of young champions and educators using Scrabble to inspire national pride and societal value.
Concluding his speech, Hon. Adams extended a warm invitation to visitors to explore Ghana beyond the tournament, visiting historic sites, enjoying local cuisine, and embracing the country’s vibrant culture.
As WESPAC 2025 unfolds, Ghana reaffirms its belief that every sport, physical or intellectual, deserves recognition and support. With Accra as its host city, the country demonstrates that the power of sport extends beyond the field into the realm of thought, language, and community.
Welcome to WESPAC 2025, where minds speak and Ghana listens.
