In a significant move to elevate Ghana’s football development, the Ministry of Sports and National Reconciliation, in collaboration with MTN Ghana, officially launched a new sponsorship initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s national teams and youth football programs.
A $2 million sponsorship agreement has been signed with the Ghana Football Association (GFA), overseen by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, for two years. This sponsorship covers the Senior Women’s National Team, the Black Queens; the men’s national team, the Black Stars; the U-20 Men’s Team, the Black Satellites; and the U-20 Women’s Team, the Princesses.
In his address, the Minister of Sport and Recreation, though unable to attend physically, the Chief Director, Wilhelmina Asamoah, conveyed appreciation for MTN Ghana’s support and urged other corporate bodies to follow suit. She underscored the importance of sports in uniting communities, stimulating economic growth, and promoting cultural cohesion.
“Growing partnerships in sports demonstrate our recognition of its potential to impact lives positively and foster national progress. We call on all stakeholders to collaborate in elevating our sports industry to international standards,” She stated.
As Ghana continues its journey towards sports excellence, the partnership with MTN Ghana marks a promising step forward, inspiring confidence that the nation’s youth and sports sectors are on a path of sustainable growth and global recognition.
President Kurt Okraku expressed appreciation for MTN Ghana’s ongoing support, noting that partnerships between corporate entities and the sports sector are vital for sustainable growth. “The collaboration between MTN Ghana and the Ghana Football Association is a testament to how private sector support can transform our football landscape. This partnership will help us develop our youth, improve our national teams’ performance, and ultimately, position Ghana as a formidable force in African football,” he said.
The event also highlighted Ghana’s broader ambitions to leverage sports as a catalyst for national development. The Ministry of Sport and Recreation is actively pursuing reforms and initiatives to foster stronger collaborations between government, corporate organizations, and sports federations. With the sports industry now valued at approximately $800 billion globally, projected to reach a trillion dollars soon, Ghana aims to emulate countries like Saudi Arabia and Morocco, which are investing heavily in sports infrastructure and development.
The event was graced by key stakeholders, including the Chief Executive of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett; Ghana Football Association President, Kurt Okraku; executives and officials from both organizations, distinguished guests, and members of the media.
During the launch, Blewett emphasized MTN Ghana’s longstanding commitment to supporting sports and community development. “MTN Ghana has been a dedicated supporter of football for many years, investing in programs that impact lives through sports, music, and philanthropy. Today’s support underscores our passion for nurturing future stars and fostering national pride,” he stated.
