The Volta Region today hosted a pivotal gathering as part of the 41st National Farmers’ Day celebrations, with the 2025 National Farmers’ Forum held at Stevens Hotel in Ho. The event was graced by Volta Regional Minister James Gunu, the Minister for Food and Agriculture Eric Opoku, and other key stakeholders dedicated to strengthening Ghana’s agricultural sector.
In his opening remarks, Regional Minister James Gunu warmly welcomed farmers, fisherfolk, agripreneurs, and development partners to the forum, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration, innovation, and investment in agriculture. “Our farmers are the backbone of Ghana’s economy, and it is vital that we support them through sustained efforts that foster growth and sustainability,” he stated.
Hon. Opoku passionately called for renewed commitment to reducing Ghana’s dependence on imported food items such as onions and peppers, despite the country’s fertile lands. He reaffirmed the government’s resolve to transform the agricultural sector into a more productive, self-sufficient industry that can meet local demand and boost exports.
A key highlight of the event was the launch of the **FEED GHANA Policy Document**, an initiative designed to revolutionize agriculture by focusing on two main pillars: converting rain-fed agriculture into irrigation-based farming and promoting value addition across the entire agricultural value chain. The policy aims to make Ghana’s agriculture more sustainable, profitable, and resilient to climate variability.
The Minister also announced that the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) will contribute GH₵1.2 million to support the 2025 Overall Best Farmer, recognizing excellence and commitment among farmers nationwide. Additionally, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture plans to present a new tractor and other farming equipment to further support farmers’ productivity.
The forum featured an open discussion where farmers, fisherfolk, and stakeholders exchanged ideas, concerns, and suggestions on how to make Ghana’s agriculture more sustainable and profitable. Participants expressed optimism about the sector’s future, emphasizing innovation, access to finance, and improved infrastructure.
In closing, Hon. Eric Opoku commended Ghanaian farmers and fisherfolk for their resilience, dedication, and innovative spirit. “Together, we will continue to build a stronger agricultural foundation that will lead Ghana towards greater economic growth and prosperity,” he said.
This gathering underscores the government’s commitment to empowering farmers and transforming Ghana’s agricultural landscape for a sustainable future.
