“Don’t abuse this opportunity, and don’t let yourself down. Your success is not just for you but for the next generation you will inspire,” these are inspring words from MP for Effutu and the Minority Leader in parliament, Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin, as he reiterated his commitment to education by providing financial assistance to talented but needy students in the Volta Region.
The initiative was announced during a courtesy visit by members of the Volta Students’ Association (VOSA) of the University of Ghana. During the meeting, Hon. Afenyo-Markin presented a sum of GH¢105,000 to cover tuition fees for 33 students for the current academic year.
In sharing his personal journey, Afenyo-Markin recounted his own struggles with financial hardship during his school days, which nearly hindered his academic pursuits. He urged the students to stay resilient and steadfast in their pursuit of education despite difficulties.
“Education remains the greatest equalizer, and I am proud to support my fellow students. Never give up on your dreams,” he stated.
This act of philanthropy is part of his broader educational initiatives, which include scholarship schemes for tertiary students in Effutu and beyond, provision of learning materials to under-resourced schools, mentorship programs to foster leadership and academic excellence, support for school infrastructure such as libraries and ICT centres, and career development opportunities through internships and training.
The Minority Leader emphasized to the beneficiaries the importance of making the most of this opportunity, encouraging them to succeed not just for themselves but as inspiration for future generations.
“Your success will inspire others and contribute to the development of Ghana,” he told the students.
VOSA President, Χοrνί Gideon Senator, thanked the MP and described the support as “a great honour and blessing,” and assured that the funds would be used responsibly to achieve academic success.
This initiative emphasizes Afenyo-Markin’s conviction that investing in education today paves the way for a brighter future for Ghana.
