The Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, has strongly criticized the NPP Old Tafo MP, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, for making false claims about the government’s Free Sanitary Pad Distribution Programme.
The Minister in correcting the MP over his misinformation about the policy has rubbished claims by the NPP’s Old Tafo MP, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, that the government’s Free Sanitary Pad Distribution Programme is overpriced.
Assafuah had alleged that the government spent GH¢292 million to procure 6.6 million packs of sanitary pads in 2026, up from 3.1 million packs in 2025, implying a cost of GH¢45 per pack, far above the market price of GH¢15-GH¢25.
However, Haruna Iddrisu described the claims as “palpable falsehood”, stating that the government is actually procuring over 12 million sanitary pads at a cost of GH¢292 million.
“The total number of sanitary pads being procured by the government is 12,000,208 at GH¢292 million, not for him to just take 6.6 million and divide it by GH¢292 million and come to the conclusion that one of it is costing GH¢45,” he said during proceedings in Parliament on November 25, 2025.
