The Minority in Parliament on Tuesday, 15th April 2025, paid a solidarity visit to the Kantamanto fire victims, making a whopping donation of GHS200,000.00 to alleviate their plights.

The donation, which took place at the Kantamanto market, saw in attendance traders and some of the leaders of the 13 groupings at the market.

Addressing the gathering, the Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, underscored the need for creditors to wean off interest on loans contracted by traders to enable them to pay on time.

It can be recalled that on January 2, 2025, a devastating fire outbreak engulfed the Kantamanto Market, raising over seven thousand shops and claiming one life, leaving many injured.

More than thirty thousand traders were affected by infernor burning their store rooms to ashes.

The livelihood of affected persons was displayed, leaving many hopeless, thereby calling for government interventions and benevolent organizations as well.

Having made a similar donation to Adum market folks, Kumasi, who also suffers the same fate, the Minority Leader indicated the need to replicate the same gesture in Accra.

Expressing his caucus’ heartfelt condolence to the fire victims, the Minority Leader indicated his caucus’ preparedness to commit to relieving the financial burden that the market folks are confronted with.

The Minority Leader expressed excitement for the ongoing rebuilding embarked on by the traders.

The Effutu lawmaker used the occasion to call on the government to support the traders referring to the purpose of the contingency fund.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the Katamanto fire victims, Aikins Boakye Mensah, an Importer expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Minority in Parliament for the gesture.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the market authorities to judiciously apply the money for its intended purpose.
