The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP) joined others at the United Nations Headquarters on Sunday, 21st September 2025, for the signing ceremony and vigil to launch the Declaration for the Protection of Humanitarian Personnel.
The Declaration, developed over the past year by a cross-regional group of countries including Australia, Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Japan, Jordan, Sierra Leone, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, in consultation with the United Nations and humanitarian organisations, seeks to galvanise global political will to protect aid workers and ensure safe, rapid, and unimpeded humanitarian assistance to civilians in conflict zones.
It reaffirms the international community’s political commitment to international humanitarian law, while also calling for that commitment to be translated into concrete and effective action.
Ghana’s participation in the signing reflects the country’s long-standing commitment to peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts, as well as its support for measures that safeguard humanitarian personnel who serve in conflict areas.
As part of the ceremony, participants signed the Declaration, viewed a commemorative installation, and joined in a solemn vigil to honour humanitarian personnel who have lost their lives while serving in conflict situations.
