Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah is set to bring his wealth of expertise and distinguished leadership to bear at the upcoming Africa Artificial Intelligence (AI) Conference, scheduled to take place in Accra from 5th to 6th November 2025. The event is being organised under the auspices of the Africa Education Trust Fund (AETF), which he chairs.
The Africa AI Conference has become one of the continent’s most important platforms for promoting technological collaboration, innovation, and policy development. It seeks to drive discussions on how artificial intelligence can be used as a catalyst for sustainable growth across Africa — particularly in education, governance, and industry.
The two-day event, themed “AI for Africa: Unlocking Opportunities for Education, Innovation, and Sustainable Development,” aims to create a platform for dialogue among government officials, educators, researchers, entrepreneurs, and technology experts from across the continent.
Dr. Spio-Garbrah, a former Minister of Communications and a strong advocate for technological advancement in Africa, is expected to deliver the keynote address at the conference. Over the years, he has been instrumental in shaping Ghana’s information and communication technology landscape. As Minister of Communications, he led key national initiatives in ICT infrastructure, e-governance, and digital inclusion, laying the foundation for Ghana’s ongoing digital transformation. His professional background, which spans leadership roles in international development, banking, and education, reflects a deep understanding of how innovation and technology can drive socio-economic progress across Africa. His keynote is therefore expected to set a compelling tone for the conference’s deliberations on the responsible and strategic use of AI in Africa’s development.
The conference will feature several distinguished speakers, including Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the first female and dynamic Vice President of the Republic of Ghana; Hon. Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff of the Republic of Ghana; Hon. Samuel Nartey George, Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations; and Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Education. Other notable speakers include Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana; Julian Kingsley Opuni, Managing Director of Fidelity Bank Ghana; and Dr. Kwasi Agbleke, President of the Sena Institute of Technology and Biochem Sciences Ltd. Their collective participation reflects the depth of expertise and leadership the conference aims to harness in shaping Africa’s technological future.
The conference will explore critical areas including the integration of AI in national digital strategies and infrastructure development, as well as cybersecurity, data governance, and ethical AI policy frameworks. Discussions will also focus on fostering AI startups and technology ecosystems while advancing digital skills and youth empowerment in AI innovation.
The Africa AI Conference is expected to draw participation from key public and private sector institutions, as well as development partners committed to Africa’s digital future. It will also serve as an avenue for Ghana to reaffirm its leadership role in digitalisation and innovation policy across the continent.
Dr. Spio-Garbrah, in his capacity as Chairman of AETF, has consistently championed the alignment of education, innovation, and industry to accelerate national development. The upcoming conference aligns with his long-held vision of positioning Africa’s youth to take advantage of technological opportunities for sustainable progress.
The event is expected to deepen continental cooperation in AI-driven innovation and open fresh avenues for collaboration among African nations as they navigate the global digital economy.
