The Energy Commission of Ghana on Thursday, 17th October 2025, hosted a delegation from the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) at its Head Office in Accra to share experiences and explore areas of collaboration in the implementation of Energy Efficiency Standards and Labelling (S&L) Programmes.
The meeting brought together key officials from both institutions, led by Engr. Enebi Shaibu Onucheyo, Director of Product Certification Department and Chairman of the SON Mandatory Energy Labelling Scheme (SONMELS) Implementation Committee, and Mr. Kennedy Amankwa, Assistant Director of Energy Efficiency at the Energy Commission of Ghana.
The engagement formed part of SON’s preparatory activities towards the establishment of the Nigerian Mandatory Energy Labelling Scheme (SONMELS), aimed at operationalising the Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for air conditioners, refrigerators, and lighting products.
Discussions centred on the Commission’s experiences in implementing Ghana’s Standards and Labelling Programme, enforcement mechanisms, and stakeholder coordination. Both leaders emphasised the importance of regional collaboration and knowledge exchange in advancing energy efficiency and sustainability across West Africa.
The meeting concluded with both parties expressing their commitment to strengthening technical cooperation and promoting energy efficiency best practices within the subregion.
