A horrifying act of homophobic violence has sparked outrage in Ghana as the Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG) demands urgent justice for a young boy, Kofi, who was severely assaulted in Atonsu, a suburb of Kumasi.

The attack, believed to have taken place between April 29 and May 1, 2025, involved a group of young men who allegedly lured Kofi into a private space under false pretenses.

Once inside, he was physically attacked in an attempt to forcefully “correct” his perceived sexual orientation—a practice widely condemned by human rights groups.

The assault was recorded by the perpetrators and circulated, adding to the victim’s humiliation and trauma.

HRRG has confirmed that the boy has suffered serious psychological and emotional distress since the attack, including several suicide attempts.

His mother has publicly confirmed the details, pleading for protection and justice.

“This is not just an attack on one boy—it’s an attack on the fundamental rights and dignity of all people in Ghana,” HRRG stated in an official release. “The viciousness of this act reflects a larger crisis of intolerance that must be addressed head-on.”

The organization is urging authorities to take the following steps without delay:

Launch a full investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible.

Ensure the immediate safety of Kofi and his family, who currently live in fear.

Provide critical psychological and legal support to help the victim recover.

HRRG is also calling on the broader community—including civil society organizations, law enforcement, and government leaders—to denounce the attack and stand up for the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals in Ghana.

“Injustice thrives where silence reigns,” the statement warned. Quoting the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu, HRRG reminded the public that “being neutral in the face of injustice is siding with the oppressor.”

The organization says that Kofi’s life now depends on how society responds. “We must act—now. Condemnation is not enough. Justice and protection must follow.”
