In a move seen as a reversal of the previous administration’s legacy, Ghana’s Parliament has approved the renaming of three public universities, stripping them of names associated with the Akufo-Addo government.
The affected institutions are:
– C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences, Navrongo (now University of Technology and Applied Sciences, Navrongo)
– Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies, Wa (now University of Business and Integrated Development Studies, Wa)
– Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development, Kumasi (now University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development, Kumasi)
The government argues the changes promote neutrality and strengthen global identity, but NDC MPs questioned the timing and cost, calling it a “political gorkpor” – suggesting the ruling party is erasing its predecessor’s footprint.
