The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, officially opened the first meeting of the second session of the Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic on February 3, 2026.
In his address, he expressed gratitude to God for guiding the nation through the previous session and called on Members of Parliament (MPs) to reflect on their conduct and commitment to democratic principles.
Hon. Bagbin highlighted the challenges and successes of the past year, acknowledging the tests of endurance, discipline, and tolerance faced by the House. He emphasized the importance of maintaining respect, unity, and love amid political differences, especially in light of the recent loss of three distinguished MPs: Murtala Mohammed, Ernest Yaw Kumi, and Naser Toure Mahama.
The Speaker led a moment of silence to honor their memories, reminding MPs of the sacrifices inherent in public service.
He urged Members to uphold decorum, foster cooperation, and prioritize national development over partisan rivalry. The Speaker also emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in parliamentary proceedings to restore public trust.
As the House embarks on a demanding legislative and oversight agenda, Hon. Bagbin called for collective efforts to serve the people and uphold the dignity of Parliament. He concluded with a rallying call for a peaceful, productive, and purposeful session, urging MPs to cherish and preserve Ghana’s parliamentary democracy and national unity.
