Approximately 500 residents of the Madina Constituency received free eye screenings over the weekend, with 47 individuals successfully undergoing cataract surgeries at no cost. The initiative was a collaborative effort between Qatar Charity and The Health Project Initiative of the Office of Madina MP, Dr. Francis-Xavier Sosu.

The outreach programme kicked off on Saturday morning at the Madina Islamic School near the Taxi Rank, where residents lined up to access comprehensive eye screening services. Recognizing the urgent need for surgical intervention among those diagnosed with cataracts, the procedures extended into Sunday at the surgical theatre of Madina Polyclinic – Kekele, culminating in the successful completion of all 47 surgeries.

Dr. Francis-Xavier Sosu, MP for Madina, emphasized the importance of prioritizing health during the holy month of Ramadan. “While Ramadan is a time for sharing food and charity, it is equally vital to focus on health and wellbeing,” he stated. “This initiative is part of my ongoing humanitarian efforts to ensure that residents have access to essential healthcare services.”

He also highlighted the broader impact of previous health interventions organized under The Health Project, which have provided critical medical services to thousands of residents across the constituency. The program is a testament to the commitment of the partnership to enhance community health and wellness.

The exercise was meticulously coordinated by the Health Project Team, led by CEO Dr. Derrick Amofa Boateng, with support from Deputy CEO and Municipal Parliamentary Coordinator for Health, Hon. Lovelace B. Kwadzo Edzor. In addition to surgeries, some patients received free medication, while others were provided with prescription eyeglasses to help improve their vision.

The surgeries began at approximately 5:30 PM on Saturday evening and continued into the early hours of Sunday, wrapping up around 7:40 AM. Post-surgery, patients were provided with meals and soft drinks during their recovery, and underwent medical reviews before being discharged.

Local leaders, including Hon. Umar Ibrahim, Assembly Member for Nkwantanang East Electoral Area, alongside his team, played a key role in ensuring the smooth organization of the event. Several dignitaries also observed the procedures, including Hon. Dzifa Awuku, Madina NDC Deputy Women’s Organiser, and Hajia Sufaya Kassim Larry, Madina NDC Treasurer. The Municipal Director of Health, Dr. Afua Commey, praised the initiative, highlighting its positive contribution to healthcare delivery in the community.

This program marks another milestone in the ongoing partnership between Qatar Charity and The Health Project, reaffirming their commitment to improving health and wellbeing in the Madina Constituency.
