The National Identification Authority (NIA) today marks twenty years of dedicated service in building a robust, inclusive and trusted National Identification System for Ghana.

Established under the National Identification Authority Act, 2006 (Act 707), the NIA has steadily progressed from its foundational mandate of registering Ghanaians and eligible foreign nationals’ resident in Ghana onto a central pillar of Ghana’s governance and service delivery architecture.

Over the past two decades, the NIA has evolved from a conceptual framework into a fully digitised, secure and reliable National Identification System.

To date, over 19 million Ghanaians have been registered and issued with the Ghana Card, a multi-purpose biometric identity card that meets international standards and serves as Ghana’s authoritative proof of identity.

Today, the Ghana Card underpins identity verification across critical sectors, including public service delivery, financial services, healthcare, telecommunications and electoral processes.

Through its biometric Identity Verification System Platform (IVSP), the NIA continues to drive secure, real-time identity authentication, enhancing operational efficiency while safeguarding against identity fraud, with over 200 million successful verifications recorded to date without a single hitch.

As it commemorates this milestone, the NIA reflects on a journey defined by resilience, innovation and institutional growth, while reaffirming its commitment to advancing a secure and inclusive identity ecosystem for Ghana and beyond.

To mark the 20th anniversary, the NIA will roll out a series of commemorative activities throughout 2026, including a national launch in May, an ID Day celebration in September and a Dinner and Awards Night in December, alongside other significant engagements throughout the year.

The NIA expresses its profound appreciation to the Government of Ghana, its technical partner, Identity Management Systems II Limited, stakeholders, sponsors of the anniversary celebrations and the general public for their continued trust and support.

This milestone reflects a shared national achievement and reinforces the NIA’s commitment to ensuring that every Ghanaian and legally resident foreign national possesses a secure and verifiable identity.
NIA, AYEKOO!
End.

21st April 2026
Signed,
Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas
Head, Corporate Affairs Directorate, NIA
