Heavy rains that fell for more than four hours on Tuesday have triggered widespread flooding and traffic across parts of Accra, submerging homes in flood-prone areas and leaving vehicles and commuters stranded.

As of 16:30 local time, the downpour had caused severe flooding and vehicular traffic on major roads and in low-lying communities. Cars were seen stuck in floodwaters, while commuters were stranded at key lorry terminals including Tema Station and the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange.

Residents in flood-prone areas reported that homes had been submerged, with water entering living rooms and forcing some families to move valuables to higher ground. Drainage channels in several neighborhoods were overwhelmed, leading to overflow onto roads and compounds.

The situation is worsening as more rain continues to fall into the late afternoon, raising fears of further disruption to transport and daily activity.

Flooding during heavy rains is a recurring challenge in Accra, often linked to blocked drains and inadequate drainage infrastructure in low-lying areas. Transport operators at the affected terminals said they were unable to dispatch vehicles safely, leaving hundreds of passengers waiting with no clear update on when services would resume.

Authorities have not yet issued an official statement, but residents are being urged to avoid driving through flooded roads and to stay clear of flood-prone areas until the rain subsides.

Weather forecasts indicate that intermittent rains may persist into the evening.
