The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has expressed concern over the recent conviction and seven-day prison sentence handed down to journalist Larry Alans Dogbey, Managing Editor of The Herald Newspaper and theheraldghana.com. The sentence was issued by an Accra High Court presided over by Justice Isaac Addo, following Mr. Dogbey’s contempt of court related to a publication about a legal dispute involving businessman Kevin Okyere and Petraco SA.
The GJA described the development as unfortunate and stated that it is closely monitoring the situation. The association reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding press freedom and protecting journalists’ rights, noting that it has engaged its legal team to determine the appropriate response.
In a statement released today, the GJA urged media practitioners and the public to exercise restraint and allow due process to take its course. The organization assured members and the public that it would soon communicate its position and any subsequent actions.
