The Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has justified the reasons behind the five-day emergency meeting of Parliament ending 28th August 2026.
According to the Speaker, he received a letter from the President John Dramani Mahama dated 11th August 2026 requesting for a recall of Parliament to consider some urgent matters before the planned recall of Parliament in October 2026.
In welcoming, Members of Parliament from their Constituencies to the Emergency Meeting, the Speaker listed the urgent matters as the consideration and passage of the Banks and Specialised Deposit 
– Taking Institutions Amendment Bill 2026.
The consideration of two (2) ministerial nominees namely Mahama Ayariga, Minister designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs and Zanetor Agyeman – Rawlings, Minister Designate for Environment, Science and Technology.
The Speaker also noted that the House is also expected to consider three nominees of the Justices of the Supreme Court namely, Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko, Justice Edward Amoako Asante and Justice Anthony Forson Junior.
Regarding the position of the Majority and Leader of Government Business in the House, the Speaker also used the opportunity to clarify that even though Mahama Ayariga has been nominated by the President as the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, he still occupies the Majority Leader’s seat until such a time the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Party in power officially informs the House about the changes.
Both the Majority and Minority Leaders, Mahama Ayariga and Alexander Afenyo- Markin respectively took turns to make brief statements to welcome Members from their various Constituencies.
