By marrying fellow legislator Millicent Amankwah Yeboah, Bawku Central MP and outgoing Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has something many politicians in Parliament can only dream of — another MP at home.
At just 34, Millicent Amankwah Yeboah has already carved out a place for herself in Ghana’s political landscape, serving as the Member of Parliament for Sunyani West on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
But beyond her growing political profile, Mrs Ayariga has another distinction that has recently attracted public attention: she is the wife of Mahama Ayariga, the Bawku Central MP and outgoing Majority Leader who is currently being vetted for appointment as Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
The interesting family connection came into the spotlight during Mr Ayariga’s vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, August 27, 2026.
In one of the lighter moments during the otherwise serious vetting process, Committee Chairman Bernard Ahiafor introduced Mr Ayariga’s father-in-law to the public but apparently skipped over his wife.
Mr Ayariga, quick to spot the omission, humorously drew the Chairman’s attention to it.
“Mr Chairman, you have introduced the father-in-law, but you haven’t introduced the daughter,” he remarked.
The Chairman subsequently introduced her as “Hon Mrs Ayariga, formerly known as Hon Millicent Yeboah-Amankwah.”
The brief exchange immediately offered Parliament watchers and Ghanaians a closer look at the woman behind one of the country’s most experienced parliamentarians — and, interestingly, another elected member of the same House.
Who is Millicent Amankwah Yeboah?
Formally known as Millicent Yeboah-Amankwah, Mrs Ayariga is a 34-year-old first-term MP representing Sunyani West in the Ninth Parliament.
She entered Parliament following the 2024 general election, where she secured 26,828 votes, representing 57.64%, defeating the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate, Ignatius Baffour-Awuah.
Before venturing into frontline politics, Mrs Ayariga built professional experience in the private sector. She previously worked as a Branch Manager for Verna Mineral Water and also served as Managing Director of MEA Connect Consultants.
She is an alumna of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University of Law in the United Kingdom.
In Parliament, she serves on the Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions Committee, where she contributes to legislative and policy discussions concerning employment and labour-related matters.
With both husband and wife now serving as elected Members of Parliament, the Ayarigas represent one of the more intriguing political couples in Ghana’s current Parliament.
While Mahama Ayariga has spent years as a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics, Millicent is building her own parliamentary identity as a first-term legislator.
And although Mr Ayariga may be moving from the Majority Leadership into the Executive, his wife will remain in Parliament — meaning the Ayariga household will continue to have a direct connection to the business of the House.
So, when the Bawku Central MP jokingly reminded the Appointments Committee to introduce “the daughter,” it was more than a family moment. It gave Ghanaians a glimpse into an interesting political partnership — one husband, one wife, and two MPs under the same roof.
