Ghana’s Ambassador to Canada meets Ecuador’s Envoy in Brazil, solicits support for Ghana’s 2027-2029 bid
Ghana has intensified its campaign for re-election to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) as Ghana’s Ambassador to Canada, Nii Amasah Namoale, undertakes courtesy calls on diplomatic missions in Brasília.
Ambassador Namoale, who is leading Ghana’s lobby in the Brazilian capital, has so far visited the embassies of Chile, Venezuela, Uruguay, Peru, Paraguay and Argentina.
On Wednesday, 16th September 2026, he continued the engagements with a visit to Ecuador.
According to the Ambassador, these are countries that have granted Ghana audience, while Ghana awaits approval from other missions for similar engagements in the coming days.
On Wednesday, 16th September 2026, Ambassador Namoale held a bilateral meeting with the Ambassador of the Republic of Ecuador, H.E. Carlos Alberto Velastegui Calero, at the Chancery of Ecuador in Brasília.
The meeting was occasioned by Ghana’s candidature for re-election to the UN Human Rights Council for the period 2027-2029, at elections scheduled for October 2026 during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
During the meeting, Ambassador Namoale conveyed warm greetings from the Government of Ghana and reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to strengthening cordial relations and cooperation with Ecuador in the political, economic and multilateral spheres.
He recalled that the Embassy of Ghana had in February 2026 transmitted a Note Verbale formally presenting Ghana’s candidature and soliciting Ecuador’s valued support.
Ambassador Namoale reiterated Ghana’s strong commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights, democratic governance, rule of law and fundamental freedoms.
He highlighted Ghana’s vision for the Council, anchored on the theme: “Promotion and Protection of Human Rights for Global Peace and Development.”
“Ghana reaffirms its enduring commitment to promoting and protecting human rights as a foundation for global peace and sustainable development.
Ghana firmly believes that the effective enjoyment of human rights fosters inclusive participation, strengthens institutions, and promotes stability and prosperity. Conversely, denying fundamental rights often fuels inequality, unrest, and conflict,” he stated.
He emphasized that Ghana’s candidature reflects its longstanding engagement with the multilateral human rights system, noting that Ghana has ratified the majority of core UN human rights treaties as well as all fundamental conventions of the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
The Ghanaian envoy stressed that upon re-election, Ghana will continue to actively engage in the work of the Council, guided by principles of cooperation, dialogue and consensus, with commitment to strengthening protection of women and children, enhancing collaboration with UN human rights mechanisms, and advancing universal ratification of core human rights instruments.
He therefore respectfully requested the Government of Ecuador to give favourable consideration to supporting Ghana’s candidature.
On bilateral reciprocity, Ambassador Namoale acknowledged receipt of Ecuador’s candidature of Ambassador Marcelo Vazquez-Bermudez as Judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the term 2027-2036, at elections scheduled for November 2026 in New York.
He informed his counterpart that the request has been submitted to Accra and the reaction of the Government of Ghana will be communicated in due course.
He expressed Ghana’s readiness to work closely with Ecuador in international fora on issues of common interest, including human rights, sustainable development, South-South cooperation and multilateralism.
Ambassador Namoale reiterated Ghana’s appreciation for Ecuador’s friendship and expressed confidence that the cordial relations between the two countries will continue to grow both bilaterally and within the multilateral system.
