The Member of Parliament for Wa East, Dr Godfred Seidu Jasaw, has supported 223 Junior High School graduates in the constituency with GH¢223,000 under his JHS Leavers Bursary Support Programme.
Each beneficiary received GH¢1,000 to assist with expenses as they prepare to enter Senior High Schools and technical institutes.
Speaking during the ceremony at the Bulenga Traditional Council’s conference hall, Dr Jasaw said the decision to give cash instead of items such as mattresses and chop boxes was deliberate.
He explained that many Senior High Schools in the region already have adequate supplies of such items and that cash support gives parents and students the flexibility to meet their most pressing educational needs.
Dr Jasaw said the beneficiaries, who obtained aggregates between 6 and 35, were selected to reward academic performance and motivate other students to work harder.
He urged the beneficiaries to take their studies seriously and make the most of the opportunity.
The MP, however, expressed concern over the performance of the 2026 BECE candidates in Wa East.
Although he acknowledged that the poor BECE performance was a national concern, Dr Jasaw called on the Wa East District Education Directorate to intensify monitoring and supervision of schools to improve academic outcomes in the district.
