The Savannah Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mahama Zakaria, has led a team to the Gindabour community in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District to assess the humanitarian situation following recent disturbances that claimed the lives of a teacher and a police officer.
The visit, undertaken on Saturday, was to commiserate with the community, assess the situation on the ground, ascertain the level of destruction and displacement, and gather data for onward reporting to NADMO Headquarters.
According to a statement signed by the Regional Public Relations Officer, Mahamadu Adams, the team was briefed by the son of the Chief of Gindabour on developments in the community.
The briefing revealed that a large number of residents have been displaced following subsequent security operations, with many, including women and children, fleeing the community in search of safety.
Some residents are reported to have moved to neighbouring communities, while others have left for unknown destinations.
A significant number of the displaced persons have reportedly sought refuge in Kulmasa.
As part of the assessment mission, the NADMO team proceeded to Kulmasa to engage the host community and commence data collection on persons who fled Gindabour and are currently seeking refuge there.
The Organisation says the full extent of displacement and destruction is still being assessed, and all information gathered will be verified and submitted through the appropriate channels.
Mahama Zakaria, on behalf of NADMO, appealed to all parties to remain calm and exercise restraint.
He also called on relevant state authorities to ensure that the circumstances surrounding the two separate but related deaths are investigated fairly and transparently to establish the truth and ensure justice.
“At this difficult moment, our thoughts are with all those who have lost loved ones, those who have been displaced, and everyone affected by the unfortunate developments. We continue to appeal for calm, peace and restraint as the relevant authorities work to establish the facts and restore normalcy,” the statement said.
