Associate Professor Emmanuel Osei Sarpong of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has been appointed as the Acting Director-General of the Authority, following the suspension of Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
Prof. Sarpong takes over at a critical time when the management of sports and public sporting facilities has become a major national concern.
He is no stranger to the NSA. Until his appointment, he served as a member of the NSA Governing Board and Chairman of its Technical Committee.
He has also served as National Coordinator for School Sports and a member of the Games and Technical Committee.
He was also a member of the 2025-2026 Governing Board which was dissolved by President John Dramani Mahama in September.
His return, therefore, places him on familiar terrain with deep institutional knowledge of the Authority.
Prof. Sarpong was among the top names tipped for the NSA top job in January 2025, when sections of the sporting fraternity called for a technically grounded professional to lead the Authority.
Academically, he is a distinguished scholar in Physical Education and Sports, specializing in exercise and sports science, physical activity and elite athlete development. He is currently the Dean of Student Affairs at UEW.
He succeeds Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, whose tenure came under intense public scrutiny over alleged involvement in a World Cup visa facilitation scheme – an allegation the NSA had denied authorizing.
Prof. Sarpong is expected to bring renewed professionalism into the management of Ghana’s sports infrastructure, school sports development, athlete welfare and administrative efficiency at the Authority.
