The largest opposition New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Delegates Congress is currently underway at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital.
More than 7,163 delegates drawn from all 16 regions of Ghana have gathered at the stadium to elect national executives to steer the affairs of the party in the build-up to the 2028 general elections.
The Congress is being held in two parts. Delegates will first deliberate on proposed constitutional amendments before voting to elect new national officers across nine positions.
The nine positions are: National Chairman, Vice Chairman, General Secretary, National Organiser, National Women’s Organiser, National Youth Organiser, National Nasara Organiser, National Treasurer and National Communications Director. A total of 45 aspirants are contesting.
Sources say fewer than 20 constitutional amendments are expected to be tabled, including proposals that were not adopted at the party’s last amendment conference in Accra on January 31, 2026. add5
Among the most significant is a proposal to make the party’s flagbearer the leader of the NPP, reversing an earlier clause that named the National Chairman as leader at all material times. add5
Delegates will also vote on a change to the election of Vice Chairpersons to require aspirants to contest for specific slots, instead of the current system where they are ranked 1st, 2nd and 3rd by votes. add5
Security is tight in and around the Baba Yara Stadium, with thousands of police personnel deployed, as Kumasi has been draped in the NPP’s red, white and blue colours.
The Electoral Commission is supervising the voting, which is taking place across 31 polling stations inside the stadium.
