Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has engaged the media and key stakeholders on the progress and priorities of Ghana’s health sector, outlining achievements chalked so far and the work ahead towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
Giving an update on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), the Minister disclosed that active membership has risen sharply from 56.3% in 2024 to 70% as of August 2026.

He revealed that government has paid GH¢2.1 billion in NHIS claims from January to September 2026, a move aimed at improving provider confidence and ensuring uninterrupted access to healthcare for subscribers.
On primary healthcare delivery, Hon. Akandoh said the Free Primary Healthcare programme is now being delivered across 135 districts nationwide, bringing basic health services closer to underserved communities.
To strengthen service delivery, the Ministry has procured 24,534 pieces of equipment to retool health facilities across the country.
The Minister further highlighted ongoing and upcoming interventions, including:
– Advancing three regional hospital projects
– Rolling out six post-basic specialist nursing programmes with over 600 students enrolled
– Deploying the electronic bed management system to improve emergency response and referral efficiency
According to him, all these initiatives form part of government’s collective effort towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) for all Ghanaians, ensuring that no one is left behind in accessing quality and affordable healthcare.
