The Idea That Refused to Die:

In 1993, in a Community Hall in Washington, D.C., a Group of Ewe professionals – Nurses from Chicago, Cab Drivers from New York, Graduate Students from Toronto – made a decision that contradicted every trend in African diaspora life.

At a time when African Immigrants were expected to assimilate, dissolve into African-American Communities, or remain locked in Hometown Associations that died with their founders, they would build something permanent.

They called it the Council of Ewe Associations of North America, CEANA.

Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor,

The name was bureaucratic:

The vision was radical: that the Ewe, a people of approximately 8 million partitioned by the Berlin Conference into four colonial states – Ghana’s Volta and Oti Regions, Togo, Benin, and western Nigeria – could be reconstituted not in Africa, but in America, and that reconstitution could be turned into development capital for home.

Thirty-three years later:

CEANA is no longer just an Ewe event.

It is the longest continuous African diaspora development festival in North America, an annual Pan-African pilgrimage held every Labor Day weekend that rotates between Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Toronto, and Washington.

It is registered as a 501(c)3 in the United States and as a recognized NGO in Ghana, with over 20 constituent associations. And it has a single, unbroken ritual: culture funds concrete.

Why the Ewe;

Why Northern-America? To understand CEANA, you must understand Eweland.

The Ewe are not a Minority Tribe. They are a transnational nation.

Their foundational narrative is the exodus from Notsie, in present-day Togo, in the 17th century, fleeing the cruelty of King Agorkorli.

That migration created a decentralized but deeply unified culture bound by language,

Gbotowor – the war cry and proverbial drum – and a system of chieftaincy that privileges consensus over autocracy.German, British, and French colonization sliced that nation with straight lines.

The Ewe became Ghanaian, Togolese, Beninois, Nigerian on paper, but remained Ewe at funerals, at Hogbetsotso, at the pouring of libation.

When Ewe migration to North America accelerated in the 1980s after economic crises and Togolese political repression, the first associations were defensive: Ewe Association of Georgia, Ewe Association of Washington DC Metro, Ewe Association of Toronto, Ewe Association of Chicago, Ewe Association of Texas, Ewe Association of New England, Ewe Association of Southern California, Ewe Association of Minnesota.

They were welfare societies. If you died, they contributed to ship your body.

If you had an outdooring, they cooked.

CEANA’s founders, including the early presidents who convened in Atlanta for the first convention, understood that these isolated nodes would not survive second-generation attrition.

The children of those nurses and cab drivers spoke English first.

The association needed to become a federation, and the federation needed a festival to make it visible.

Anatomy of a Festival That Is Not a Festival

If you attend CEANA for the first time, you think you have come to a party.

There is Kente, not only the Ashanti type but the distinctive Ewe Kente – Agbamevor – with its complex weft and philosophical names: “The heart of the chief is broad,” “If the lion’s mouth is open you cannot put your head inside.”

There is Agbadza, danced in a circle of call and response, the drum master speaking proverbs.

There is Borborbor, the recreational dance that is actually a historical archive of community cooperation.

But the schedule, which has remained consistent since the 1990s, tells another story.

These are: Friday: The Council of Representatives (COR) meeting.

This is CEANA’s Parliament. Presidents of all constituent associations sit, chaired by the CEANA President, currently Dr. Peter Nat Abotchie in recent cycles.

They review financials, audit project sites in Ghana/Togo/Benin, vet scholarship beneficiaries, and debate new member associations. Triennial elections are held. This is governance.

Saturday Morning: Development Plenary and Youth Forum.

Each year has a theme that functions as policy.

2019 in Charlotte, hosted by Ewe Association of Charlotte at Crowne Plaza Executive Park with an estimated 1,000 guests from USA, Canada, Europe, Ghana, Togo and Benin: “The Role of Education in the Development of Eweland.”

2023 in Atlanta Airport Marriott, the 30th Anniversary: “Empowering Our Youth Towards Innovative Entrepreneurship In Transformational Agriculture” – a direct response to youth unemployment in Volta.

2025 in Dallas: “Our Health, Our Wealth.”

The 2026 convention returning to Washington D.C. after 16 years: spotlight on youth and young adult programming.

Saturday Evening:

The Fundraising Gala and Star Club Banquet.

This is the financial engine. Registration is tiered – in 2023, $219 for adults, $140 for 10-17 year olds, $95 for children – but the real capital comes from the Star Club, a patron tier of high-net-worth Ewes and friends of Eweland who pledge multi-year commitments.

The gala is where development is auctioned.

Sunday: Thanksgiving Service, then departure.

And crucially, every convention accounts for how funds raised previously had been spent.

It is not just fundraising. It is accountability theater, vital for diaspora trust.

What the Money Actually Built For three decades, CEANA operated on a micro-philanthropy model, but micro multiplied by 33 years becomes macro.

Its verified footprint includes: Education:

Annual SHS scholarships for students in Ghana, Togo, Benin; support for construction of classroom blocks and libraries in rural Volta, including communities cut off during rainy seasons.

Health: Donation of medical equipment to district hospitals, COVID-19 relief supplies, and recent mobilization for victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage that displaced thousands in Volta.Connectivity: Pedestrian footbridges in flood-prone areas, enabling children to reach school during rains – a small intervention with massive human capital impact.

Institutional Presence:

Operation as a recognized NGO in Ghana, allowing direct project execution without state intermediation, but in partnership with chiefs and district assemblies.

The model inverted classic remittance logic. Instead of $200 sent for a funeral, $200 aggregated 5,000 times builds a library. It is a collective remittance.

The Pivot:

From a Charity to an Investment Machine

CEANA’s first 25 years were about proving that diaspora could be reliable.

Its next phase is about proving diaspora can be transformative.

The pivot was articulated on September 13, 2025, at the Bethesda Marriott, Washington D.C., at the 33rd Anniversary Celebration.

Special Guest of Honour, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament and himself from the north but draped in Ewe Agbamevor, told the 1,300 delegates and streaming audience: “You have shown that culture should not only bring people together to celebrate.

It can also bring people together to develop.”

The Rt. Hon. Speaker Bagbin, who has observed CEANA for three decades of contributions including scholarships and support for construction of schools, libraries, and healthcare facilities, issued two challenges that now define CEANA’s Pan-African future.

First, the immortal legacy project: a CEANA-University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) Cancer Research and Treatment Centre in Ho.

His argument was brutal and clear: Volta Region has no comprehensive cancer treatment; families sell lands to travel to Korle-Bu or abroad.

A diaspora-funded oncology centre would end medical exile.

Second, the platform shift:

Convert cultural network into investment platform.

CEANA’s network – doctors at Johns Hopkins, engineers at Boeing, professors at Howard, entrepreneurs in Houston – should be leveraged as a bridge to connect traditional leaders and local stakeholders with international investors, universities, technology firms, and development partners in critical sectors such as agriculture, tourism, infrastructure, and enterprise development.

This was reinforced by Gabriel Tanko Kwamigah-Atokple, Member of the Council of State representing Volta Region, who said: “Young people need jobs, mentorship, access to markets, and technology, not just assurances of potential.

“In that moment, CEANA stopped being a hometown association festival and became a Pan-African institution offering a template for Ghana’s Year of Return and Beyond the Return policies.

Year of Return brought tourists. CEANA brings owners.

Why CEANA Matters for Pan-Africanism Classical Pan-Africanism was state-to-state:

Nkrumah to Sekou Toure, Du Bois to Garvey. CEANA represents the new Pan-Africanism: people-to-people, sub-national, transnational, and fiscally self-sustaining.

It succeeds where many Pan-African projects fail because it has three assets:

A non-state identity that is stronger than state identity.

An Ewe from Keta, Ghana and an Ewe from Lome, Togo have more cultural commonality than a Ga and an Ewe both from Ghana. CEANA uses that.

A ritual that prevents forgetting.

Annual Labor Day convention is liturgical. Children who would never go to Ghana learn Agbadza because they want to perform at CEANA.

A dual legitimacy.

In America, it is a 501(c)3 – legible to IRS and corporations.

In Ghana, it is a development partner to chiefs and MPs – legible to tradition and parliament.

Conclusion

In an era where Ghana struggles to bridge the gap between diaspora goodwill and domestic development execution, where $4.5 billion in remittances often goes to consumption, CEANA shows how to institutionalize diaspora.

It is no longer just about Eweland in Ghana, Togo and Benin & Nigeria.

It is about a model for all of Africa: How do you turn a Labor Day weekend party into a 33-year-old development bank that wears Kete from Agotime-Kpetoe?
That is CEANA’s history. And its future has just been drafted in Washington DC, for 2026.

In 2027, Boston, here we come!!!!
