The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, has announced significant improvements in Ghana’s macroeconomic indicators, revealing that average lending rates have nearly halved in less than two years.

Speaking at the launch of the maiden edition of “Ghana in Numbers 2025” at Alisa Hotel, Accra, Dr. Asiama said average lending rate declined from 30.25 percent in December 2024 to 15.78 percent in September 2026.

He also disclosed that growth in real private sector credit strengthened considerably from 0.20 percent in December 2024 to 26.42 percent in September 2026, signalling improved credit conditions for businesses and households.

The Governor attributed the gains to the Bank’s macroeconomic management efforts over the last couple of years, stating that “inflation is low and has been in single digits for 13 consecutive months, the exchange rate is relatively stable notwithstanding the external headwinds, and banking sector resilience has improved significantly.”

The “Ghana in Numbers 2025” report, produced by the Ghana Statistical Service on the theme “Youth and the Demographic Transition,” was described by Dr. Asiama as a significant national resource that brings together authoritative socio-economic data.

He commended the GSS for the initiative, noting that a dedicated monetary and financial-sector section drawing on BoG data will help businesses and investors make informed decisions.

On innovation, Dr. Asiama announced that the central bank is advancing its institutional capacity through the establishment of a Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence Department and is developing a directive to regulate the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the financial sector to promote innovation while addressing emerging risks.

He called for the underlying data of the Ghana in Numbers report to be made available through a dedicated electronic portal in machine-readable formats to enable researchers to apply AI and advanced analytics.

The Governor said beyond stability, the Bank is pursuing initiatives to promote financial inclusion, particularly for young people, women, MSMEs and underserved communities, to harness Ghana’s demographic dividend.

“Ghana in Numbers should not be seen merely as a statistical publication, but as a national resource for understanding our circumstances, evaluating our progress and making better decisions about our collective future,” he said.
