The Upper East Regional Chief Imam, Yussif Imam Umar, has formally appealed to the government to revise curfew hours in Bawku, citing disruptions to critical Islamic practices, including dawn meals and prayers.
The request was made during a courtesy visit on Monday to the Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Donatus Atanga, who pledged to engage security stakeholders on the matter.
Imam Umar emphasized that the current curfew restrictions hinder residentsโ€™ ability to prepare Suhoor (the pre-dawn meal during Ramadan) and attend Fajr (dawn) and Isha (night) prayers at mosques. Additionally, the limitations impact Taraweeh, special nightly prayers observed during Ramadan, he added.
The appeal was presented on behalf of the Bawku Municipal Chief Imam, Alhaji Yaakub Muhammad Dantani.
In response, Mr. Akamugri assured the Imam that the appeal would be reviewed by the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and forwarded to the Interior Minister for consideration.
He acknowledged the curfewโ€™s inconvenience but stressed its necessity to maintain peace amid ongoing tensions in Bawku.
โ€œWhile the curfew is not desirable, it remains a vital measure to safeguard lives,โ€ he stated, urging residents to uphold law and order as government efforts to resolve the crisis continue.
Bawku has faced recurrent ethnic clashes, prompting the imposition of a dusk-to-dawn curfew to curb violence. The government has repeatedly called for dialogue to address the root causes of the conflict, which has displaced hundreds and disrupted socio-economic activities.
The Regional Minister reaffirmed commitments to restoring lasting peace, urging patience and cooperation from all stakeholders.
