President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the Finance Minister to make provisions in the budget for the year ending 31st December 2025 for the construction of sea defence under the Blekusu Sea Defence Project phase in the Volta region.

This he said offers a glimmer of hope for lasting protection against future coastal erosion and potential tidal surges within the area and beyond, “I will instruct the finance minister to allocate funds in the 2025 budget for phase two of the Blekusu Sea Defence Project.”

On Thursday he expressed solidarity with tidal wave victims in the Ketu South Constituency, promising to begin work on the second phase of sea defence efforts and also compensate the affected residents.

Shortly after presiding over the 68th Independence Anniversary Celebration in Accra, the president visited communities in the Volta Region ravaged by recent tidal waves: Amutinu, Salakorpe, and Agavedzi.

President Mahama’s visit included inspecting the damage caused by the relentless waves. He listened attentively to the stories of residents who had lost their homes, livelihoods, and sense of security. As a gesture of support, the President donated food, essential relief items, and cash to help the affected communities start the challenging task of rebuilding their lives.

The President also expressed his disappointment and concern regarding the existing resettlement efforts. After visiting the affected areas in Agavedzi, he noted: “I am shocked at the shoddy work done on the resettlement housing project for tidal wave victims.”

This strong statement highlights the urgent need for improved oversight and accountability in future infrastructure projects that support vulnerable communities.

President Mahama’s presence in the affected areas on Independence Day underscores his commitment to prioritizing the needs of the vulnerable.
