President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno to replace the current Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare as part of ongoing reforms by the new regime to reset the country at all levels of administration for efficiency in line with the party’s manifesto.

The decision, announced on Thursday,14th March in a statement from the presidency marked a significant shake-up within the Ghana Police Service and has also come as a surprise to many who believe the new Government will not touch Dr. Dampare for security and optical seasons.

While no official reason has been provided for Dr. Dampare’s dismissal, sources suggest that the move is part of a broader restructuring effort aimed at resetting the leadership and operational of the service subject to new direction.

Meanwhile, the swearing-in ceremony of Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP) today, Friday, March 14, at 11am at the Jubilee House.

Dr. Dampare, who was appointed IGP in 2021, played a pivotal role in implementing key policing reforms.

Under his leadership, the Ghana Police Service introduced various initiatives aimed at improving public trust and security. His tenure was marked by enhanced community engagement, internal discipline measures, and a focus on professionalizing the service.

Security experts and analysts have credited him with contributing to a reduction in crime and fostering greater accountability within the force.

As COP Christian Yohuno assumes the role of IGP, expectations remain high regarding the direction of policing in Ghana.
