Roche Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening a deeper partnership with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).

On Thursday, April 24, 2025, a delegation from Roche Ghana paid a courtesy call on the NHIA’s Head Office in Accra to congratulate Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe on his appointment as Chief Executive and discuss expanded collaboration in the areas of diagnostics, treatment access, and healthcare system strengthening.

Welcoming the Roche Ghana team, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe expressed optimism about the future of healthcare delivery under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), noting significant improvements in funding mechanisms.

“We are happy to have you here,” Dr. Bampoe said. “The funding of the NHIS has now been uncapped, and resources are coming directly to the Authority. Hopefully, this will enable us to pay health providers on time. A healthy population is indeed a more productive population.”

Roche Ghana’s Contributions

In his presentation, Henry Acheampong highlighted Roche’s ongoing contributions to Ghana’s healthcare sector. He noted that Roche, in partnership with the government, was instrumental in establishing cancer treatment centres at Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, Tamale Teaching Hospital, and Ho Teaching Hospital.

Recognizing persistent gaps in diagnostic capabilities, Mr. Acheampong disclosed that Roche has donated critical medical equipment to address these challenges. He emphasized that beyond infrastructure, Roche remains committed to supporting awareness and advocacy campaigns, capacity building within health systems, and ensuring access to quality treatment for patients using their NHIS cards.

“We aim to shift the narrative,” he said. “We are working towards ensuring that at least 80 percent of patients receive standard-of-care treatment promptly.”

Tackling Renal Anaemia and Diagnostic Gaps

Mr. Acheampong also addressed Roche’s commitment to supporting renal patients by ensuring a steady supply of erythropoietin, which is crucial for managing renal anaemia, especially as NHIA plans to expand dialysis care.

NHIA’s Vision for Preventive Healthcare

Dr. Senanu Djokoto, Deputy Chief Executive for Operations at NHIA, highlighted the Authority’s evolving focus toward prevention and health promotion.

“Historically, NHIS has been mostly curative-focused,” Dr. Djokoto said. “Now, with initiatives like Free Primary Healthcare, we are dramatically shifting towards preventive and promotive healthcare actions. The work Roche is doing, and plans to do, will make a real difference.”

Dr. Mrs. Ruby Aileen Mensah Annan, Director for Strategic Health Purchasing, praised Roche for their reliability and proactive support, stating, “The dependability of the Roche team has been commendable. It’s exciting that they are introducing new areas of support.”

A Commitment to Continued Collaboration

Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe concluded the meeting by emphasizing the NHIA’s focus on improving the existing NHIS and advancing, including the Free Primary Healthcare and Mahama Care initiatives.

“We should continue this discussion,” he urged. “This meeting will not go to waste.”

The visit strengthens public-private collaboration in Ghana’s health sector, offering hope for more robust healthcare delivery systems that are accessible, efficient, and responsive to the needs of all Ghanaians.
