The Management of Ghana Women’s Football League of the Ghana Football Association, on 14th May 2025, called on the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, in his office to present the trophies for the upcoming MTN FA Cup and the Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League to him.
The delegation was led by Dr. Tony Aubynn, the Chairman of the domestic league Committee of the GFA, who seized the opportunity to invite the Minister to the two big matches on the calendar of the GFA scheduled to be staged at the University of Ghana Stadium on Sunday, 18th May, 2025.
Presenting the trophies, Dr. Aubynn noted that it was very appropriate to call on the Minister before they embarked on the tour with the trophies to various institutions.
Dr. Aubynn drew the attention of the Minister to the growth of women’s football in Ghana, stating the various laurels women’s football has won for the country in recent times.
He appealed to the Minister to broaden his interest and attention to women’s football, adding that the sport has helped to take many young ladies off the streets and has provided a source of livelihood for them.
In his remarks, the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Mr. Adams, welcomed the delegation and praised the recent performance of female sports teams in the country, citing many sterling performances by teams like the GRA royal hockey ladies and other women’s teams who continue to make the nation proud.
‘’Women’s football has in recent years taken its much-deserved place as a premium sporting spectacle which attracts thousands of fans and supporters’’, he noted.
He indicated the Ministry’s readiness to invest in women’s football and ensure its growth, noting the importance of having a sports fund in place and believing it was the key to unlock the doors to the development and growth of various sporting disciplines.
The Minister charged the communication units of the Ministry and that of the GFA to strengthen publicity for women’s football to attract more fan participation and interest in women’s football.
