“Meeting with MMDCEs and Presiding Members: A unified front for Regional development”, , according to the Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo.

The Regional Minister had the the opportunity and the honour of chairing the 1st Greater Accra Regional Co-ordinating Council (RCC) Meeting with distinguished MMDCEs and Presiding Members under her jurisdiction .

This pivotal engagement reaffirmed their collective commitment to the President’s Reset Agenda and the mandate entrusted to them by the people of Greater Accra.

Discussions focused on critical regional priorities sanitation, flood management, public safety, revenue mobilization, and the full implementation of the Local Governance Act.

The Minister emphasized the need for innovation, transparency, and the timely submission of 2025 Budget Workplans to enable prompt access to the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF).

“We also assessed the progress of ongoing projects and reiterated the urgency of completing abandoned ones”.

A key highlight of the meeting was the emphasis on sanitation a persistent challenge that threatens our vision of building a safe, inclusive, and resilient modern urban region.

The prevalence of poor waste disposal, open defecation, illegal dumping, and choked drains demands immediate and coordinated action.

Sanitation must be viewed not only as an environmental issue but as a developmental imperative.

Madam Ocloo therefore called on all MMDAs to:

Rigorously enforce sanitation by-laws,

Deepen public education and promote behavioural change,

Collaborate meaningfully with private sector actors, and

Begin preparing for the National Sanitation Day Exercise, to be launched by H.E. the President.

In alignment with the President’s directive, sanitation is now a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) for all MMDCEs.

To incentivize excellence, an award scheme will soon be introduced to recognize best-performing Assemblies in sanitation and environmental management.

Although the introduction of the monthly Regional Sanitation Day marked a positive start during my early days in office, preparations for the upcoming national exercise have necessitated its temporary suspension. Nonetheless, Linda Ocloo implored all Assemblies to sustain and build upon the momentum already created, ensuring our communities remain clean and healthy.

“We also underscored the importance of street lighting as a key enabler of public safety and the 24-hour economy. Upon assumption of office, I committed to ensuring 70% functionality of streetlights in the region a goal we achieved within our first 50 days”.

However, issues of theft and sustainability persist. To address these- “I call on Assemblies to:

Conduct regular audits and maintenance of lighting infrastructure,

Partner with local security and community stakeholders,

And invest in smart, energy-efficient lighting solutions.

As the region’s highest coordinating body, the RCC stands ready to lead with purpose and accountability. Let us work in unison innovatively and transparently to deliver tangible, lasting improvements for the people of Greater Accra”.
