At a press briefing held on 30th June, the Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection announced the commencement of the 96th cycle of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) cash grant disbursement.

The disbursement exercise will benefit 350,000 LEAP beneficiary households across all 260 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

The LEAP Programme seeks to reduce poverty and vulnerability by providing sustained consumption support and promoting human capital development.

Addressing the media, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, emphasized that the Government, under the leadership of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, has allocated GH₵953.5 million to the LEAP Programme in the 2025 national budget—representing a significant increase from the 2024 allocation of GH₵728.8 million.

She further disclosed that the Government has released One Hundred and Thirty-Nine Million, Two Hundred and Fifty-Seven Thousand, Three Hundred and Sixty-Three Ghana Cedis, Ninety-Seven Pesewas (GH₵139,257,363.97) for the 96th cycle, to be disbursed to beneficiary households across the country.

The new LEAP grant amounts are as follows:

One-member household: Increased from GH₵256 to GH₵320.00

Two-member household: Increased from GH₵304 to GH₵380.00

Three-member household: Increased from GH₵352 to GH₵440.00

Four or more-member household: Increased from GH₵424 to GH₵530.00

These increments are intended to cushion households against rising inflation and the increased cost of living.

The Sector Minister also announced that Cabinet has granted approval to increase the number of beneficiary households from the current Three Hundred and Fifty Thousand (350,000) to Four Hundred Thousand (400,000). She noted that the ongoing reassessment exercise is vital to achieving this target, as it aims to identify and enroll the most vulnerable households for future disbursements.

The Honorable Minister urged all LEAP beneficiary households to make the most of the programme’s benefits by prioritizing household nutrition, children’s education, and investments in income-generating activities to improve their long-term welfare.

Hon. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey also expressed her deep appreciation to the Government of Ghana and development partners for their continuous support. She encouraged the media and the general public to play a key role in monitoring the disbursement process to ensure transparency and accountability.

Also present at the press briefing were the Chief Director of the Ministry, Dr. Afisah Zakariah, and the Director of the LEAP Programme, Mr. Myles Ongoh.

To qualify for LEAP, households must be extremely poor and include vulnerable members such as orphans and vulnerable children, elderly persons (65 years and above) without support, persons with severe disabilities, and extremely poor pregnant women or lactating mothers with infants under one year.
