The Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare (MP), has commended the Ghana Cement Company Limited (GHACEM) for taking a bold step towards sustainable industrialization with the official launch of its latest product, Eco Cool Cement, held in Tema on Wednesday, July 3, 2025.

Describing the launch as a significant milestone in Ghana’s construction and industrial space, the Minister noted that the new cement product aligns seamlessly with the government’s vision for an environmentally sustainable, job-creating industrial transformation. “Eco Cool Cement is not just a new offering; it is a bold testament to Ghana’s commitment to sustainable industrialization, environmental stewardship, and economic progress,” she said.

According to the Minister, this innovation supports government’s newly launched 24hr+ Economic Policy, particularly under its Build 24 initiative which promotes the use of local construction materials such as cement and bricks to conserve foreign exchange, drive affordable housing projects, and provide decent jobs through vocational skills training.

Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare also highlighted the strong contribution of the construction sector to Ghana’s economy, noting a growth rate of 9.6% in 2024. She emphasized that cement remains a foundational input for key government projects, including special economic zones, factory shells for the garment sector, and irrigation dams under the Feed the Industry, Rapid Industrialization for Jobs programme.

Hon. Ofosu-Adjare lauded GHACEM’s commitment to quality and regulatory collaboration, particularly its support for the training of Trading Standards Inspectors under the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA). She revealed that the Inspectors will soon be deployed to production and trading sites to enforce compliance and eliminate substandard products from the market. “The latest GSA cement inspection report reflects notable improvements in product quality, a testament to your dedication,” she added.

The Minister further noted that the launch ties into Ghana’s ambitions under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). She stressed that harmonizing standards will boost the competitiveness of Ghanaian products across the continent and position brands like GHACEM as frontrunners in eco-conscious manufacturing.

In closing, she urged industry players to be inspired by GHACEM’s innovation and invest in cleaner technologies and research. “Eco Cool Cement sets a new benchmark for the construction industry, demonstrating that we can build stronger, greener, and more resilient communities,” she said.

Dr. Frank Huber, Managing Director of Ghana Cement Company Limited (GHACEM), described the launch of Eco Cool Cement as a groundbreaking step toward sustainability and innovation in Ghana’s construction sector. Dr. Huber, in his presentation, explained that Eco Cool Cement offers the same technical strength and durability as conventional cement, but with a significantly reduced carbon footprint.

He underscored the importance of embedding sustainability into the fabric of Ghana’s industrial development, positioning the new product as one of the most sustainable cements available globally, made possible through advanced manufacturing technology.

The GHACEM boss commended the President of the Republic, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, for his strong commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and reiterated GHACEM’s readiness to contribute meaningfully toward that national target.

“We cannot tackle climate change without industry leadership and consumer responsibility,”5 he stressed, calling for collaborative efforts across sectors to support Ghana’s decarbonization agenda.

Also present at the brief but important event was the Chief Director of the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Noah Tumfo, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Innocent Haligah and Dr. Ishmael Yamson, a key partner of GHACEM.
