Key interventions by Health Minister after incident at Ridge Hospital

Key Interventions by Health Minister Hon Kwabena Mintah Akandoh after the Incident at Ridge Hospital over the weekend

1. Condemnation and On-Site Visit

• The Minister swiftly issued a strong condemnation of the assault, calling it “unfortunate” and stressing that such attacks endanger healthcare delivery and patient safety .

• On August 18, 2025, Minister Akandoh personally visited Ridge Hospital to assess the situation and reassure both staff and management of the Ministry’s full backing .

2. Security Enhancements

• The Ministry has since bolst security at the hospital—including in high-risk areas such as the Accident & Emergency Unit, Outpatient Department, and the morgue—to prevent future breaches .

• A letter was sent to the Greater Accra Police Command to stationed police personnel at the hospital. This the Ministry can confirmed that it has been done.

• A special committee was tasked specifically to evaluate these vulnerabilities and determine if police presence should be stationed at critical points .

3. Launching a Committee to Investigate

• A Six-member committee—comprising a lawyer, auditor, HR officers, medical doctors, and a nurse—was constituted after the Minister’s visit to probe the incident .

• The probe has a dual mandate: the Ministry will handle administrative aspects, while the Ghana Police Service will pursue the criminal investigation .

• The Minister instructed that the committee to finalize its work within one week and apply recommendations promptly .

4. Support for the Victim

• At the hospital, Minister Akandoh met with the assaulted nurse and pledged to cover her medical expenses and compensate her for the stolen items, including her phone . This has also been done.

5. Legal Action and Arrests

• The Minister condemned the attack, urged legal accountability, and emphasized that “the law must take its own course” .

• An arrests have been confirmed in connection with the incident, and the police have been directed to continue their investigation and apprehend all involved .

6. Handling Public Reaction

• The Minister defended his handshake with the suspect—explaining it occurred after hospital staff identified him, and he immediately instructed police to take action. He reminded the public that his role is not to act as a police officer .
