The Minority Caucus mourns profoundly the passing of Her Excellency Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, a revered former First Lady of our Republic, a fearless advocate for women’s rights, and a trailblazer whose unwavering service has left an indelible mark on Ghana’s history.

In a statement issued in Accra by the Minority and signed by Osahen Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, says “her name is forever synonymous with the empowerment of Ghanaian women and the relentless pursuit of social justice”.

In 1982, Nana Konadu founded the 31 December Women’s Movement, an influential organization that became a beacon of hope and progress for countless women across the nation. Through her visionary leadership, she championed women’s empowerment, community development, and increased participation in national decision-making processes. Her dedication and conviction inspired a generation of women to believe in their strength and their right to lead.

According to the statement, the former First Lady played an instrumental role in advocating for the inclusion of the “Affirmative Action” clause in the 1992 Constitution was a groundbreaking achievement—one that continues to underpin Ghana’s commitment to equity, fairness, and inclusion. Her boldness and unwavering belief in justice later led her to make history as one of the first Ghanaian women to establish and lead a political party, the National Democratic Party (NDP), in 2012.

As First Lady, Nana Konadu transformed the office from a ceremonial role into a platform for development, social justice, and transformative change. Her tireless efforts ensured that education and health became central pillars of her advocacy. She worked tirelessly to ensure that schools, daycare centers, and literacy programs reached even the most deprived communities, embodying her deep compassion and unwavering dedication to the well-being of Ghanaian families.

“Her legacy is one of courage, resilience, and service—an inspiration to generations of women, leaders, entrepreneurs, and advocates for progress. Nana Konadu’s life was a testament to the power of conviction and the importance of standing for what is right”.

The Minority Leader said, “today, we extend our deepest condolences to our colleague, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Klottey-Korle Constituency, to the entire Agyeman-Rawlings family, and to all those whose lives were touched by her extraordinary service and compassion. Her legacy will continue to inspire and guide us as we strive to build a more just, equitable, and compassionate Ghana”.

May her soul rest in eternal peace.
