The Member of Parliament for Prestea Huni-Valley, Robert Wisdom Cudjoe, has organized a free breast cancer screening and counselling event aimed at raising awareness and promoting early detection among women and girls in the constituency. The initiative took place at the Himan Community Centre and is part of ongoing efforts to combat breast cancer, which remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in Ghana.
Addressing attendees, MP Cudjoe emphasized the importance of regular check-ups and early diagnosis. “October is breast cancer awareness month, and today in Prestea Huni-Valley, we have gathered many women to undergo screening and receive counselling. We want to remind everyone that if you notice any abnormal signs in your breasts, it’s crucial to visit the nearest hospital promptly for proper verification and guidance,” he said.
The MP also announced plans to extend the initiative to include girls in the area. In collaboration with local mining companies, the exercise will be expanded to cover students in the three Senior High Schools within the constituency. Furthermore, traditional authorities have requested that the programme be extended to basic schools, and MP Cudjoe assured that these activities would be carried out over the next two weeks.
Supporting the initiative, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Prestea Huni-Valley, Matthew Ayeh, expressed his support for the campaign, highlighting the importance of community participation in health education.
Nana Mutty Ankama II, Gyaase Panyin representing the Divisional Chief of Himan-Prestea, commended both the MP and the MCE for their efforts. He revealed that traditional leaders had initially planned a similar activity, but the intervention by the MP and MCE had made the programme more impactful.
He further urged women and girls to take advantage of such health initiatives, emphasizing that early detection can save lives. “Breast cancer is deadly if not detected early. We appreciate this initiative because it can help save our loved ones. We also call on radio stations to continue educating the public about the importance of screening and awareness,” he said.
The event was well-attended, with many women from the community turning out in support of the campaign. The initiative highlights the local leaders’ commitment to enhancing health outcomes and increasing awareness about breast cancer in the region.
