President Mahama has praised the Bank of Ghana and the Ministry of Finance for stabilizing the Ghana Cedi, noting increased trust as evidenced by transactions now being quoted in cedis instead of dollars. He expressed gratitude to the authorities for their currency management, highlighted the regained respect for the currency, and called for sustained efforts.
He also emphasized that the Cedi’s 60th anniversary is an opportunity for reflection on its development and future fortification.
The celebration was part of the four-day Cedi@60 International Currency Conference organized by the Bank of Ghana and Currency Research.
He highlighted that the shift from pricing goods and services in dollars to cedis signals renewed trust in the national currency.
Speaking at the Cedi@60 International Currency Conference on November 18, President Mahama shared a recent personal experience: “A relative asked for an invoice for a car, and I was surprised to see it quoted in cedis—no dollars. A few years ago, invoices for such purchases were in dollars.”
He commended the central bank and the Finance Ministry for their currency management, stating, “I want to express gratitude to the governor and the team at the Bank of Ghana, the Ministry of Finance. Ghanaians appreciate your efforts in managing our currency.”
President Mahama emphasized that Ghana’s currency has regained respect and urged economic managers to sustain this momentum: “A lot of respect has returned to our currency, and I hope you keep up the good work.”
He also reflected on the significance of the Cedi’s 60th anniversary, viewing it as an opportunity for deeper analysis: “The Cedi at 60 is more than a celebration; it’s a moment for reflection—considering what our currency stands for, how it has evolved, and how to fortify it for the future.”
The four-day Cedi@60 International Currency Conference, held from November 17 to 20 and organized by the Bank of Ghana in partnership with Currency Research, commemorates the 60th anniversary of the Cedi.
