A.M.A Warns: Apply for permit before blocking any road in Accra to avoid sanctions

The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has cautioned all event organisers, churches, corporate bodies, and social groups to formally apply for a permit from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) before blocking any road within the metropolis for their activities to avoid sanctions.

According to him, no individual or organisation has the authority to block a public road without clearance from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), explaining that such unauthorised actions worsen traffic congestion, disrupt emergency response routes, and endanger public safety.

Mayor Allotey issued the caution after the Metropolitan Security Council (METSEC) meeting on Tuesday, 18th November 2025, where security agencies and city authorities reviewed ongoing safety, traffic, and sanitation concerns across Accra ahead of the Christmas festivities.

He stressed that the Assembly would “strictly enforce road-use regulations to ensure order in the city,” henceforth adding that defaulters would face sanctions.

Mayor Allotey disclosed that the Assembly, in collaboration with the Ghana National Fire Service and National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), had initiated “Operation Disaster-Free Christmas”, a campaign to reduce fire outbreaks in both residential and commercial areas before, during and after the festive seasons.
