The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has given the contractor handling the Salaga Market redevelopment, March as the final deadline for completion to revive commercial activities in the metropolis to reduce decongestion.
Speaking during an inspection tour of the site on Wednesday, the Mayor, accompanied by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Lydia Akweley Obenewaa Ocloo and the Member of Parliament for the Odododiodioo Constituency, Hon. Alfred Nii Kotey Ashie said his greatest desire was to see the Salaga Market restored to full operation, adding that he expects traders to commence trading activities by the end of January, even as finishing works continue.
He said from Monday, the Assembly would begin the necessary processes to allocate shops to traders, noting that the AMA intends to move some traders into the new structures by January.
The Mayor announced additional measures to improve safety and operations, including installing more lights to brighten the market and enhance security, emphasising that the allocation of shops would be done strictly by the AMA without the involvement of middlemen or agents.
“There will be no agents or middlemen involved in allocating the shops, so don’t deal with anyone or pay money to any individual. If you want a shop to sell in, please come to the AMA. You will be given because you are a Ghanaian, so I beg you don’t pass through anyone,” he cautioned.
